This map depicts Vancouver’s streetcar system at the close of the streetcar era.  The year before, the British Columbia Electric Railway had recently announced that its streetcar system would be replaced with buses.  The British Columbia Electric Railway was a bit of an anomaly: it began its life as a transit operator that happened to own an electric utility, because electric streetcars required electric power.  By 1945, the electricity generating business had become far more lucrative than the mass transit operation, and the company was looking to shut down its streetcar operation.
