Houston was a small city of less than 50,000 in the late 19th century, long before the oil boom and the invention of air conditioning turned it into the sprawling behemoth that it is today.  Texas was largely rural in the 1890s, and the great metropolis of the Gulf Coast was New Orleans.  But Houston during this period still had a dozen electric streetcar lines covering all parts of the city.  In this map, of the 1895 system, Houston had recently electrified its streetcar network, replacing the horses and mules that had pulled the trains before.
