New York City Subway planned system map, 1865

Regular price $30.00 $0.00
This is a map of the very first New York City subway proposal to be considered, which was proposed to the New York State government in 1865.  It would've had two tracks beneath Broadway and Fifth Avenue.  It was approved by the Legislature, and had enough money, but ran afoul of the Tweed political machine and vetoed.  Instead, New York built elevated railways, and it would take until 1904 for the subway to open.
