This is a map of the very first New York City subway proposal to be considered, which was proposed to the New York State government in 1865.  It would've had two tracks beneath Broadway and Fifth Avenue.  It was approved by the Legislature, but the plan ran afoul of the horse-pulled streetcar interests.  Governor Reuben Fenton, backed by the horse-pulled streetcar companies, vetoed the project.  Instead, New York built elevated railways, and it would take until 1904 for the first subway to open.
