After the approval of the BART system in 1962, the city of San Francisco decided that it had to keep up with the Joneses.  After all, a shiny new automated subway with aluminum cars made the aging streetcars of the San Francisco Municipal Railway look bad by comparison.  Thus, in 1966, San Francisco voters were asked to upgrade most of the surviving lines to subway operation, and to build an all-new subway under Geary Boulevard.  (The voters declined.)
